Shimla in winter is nothing short of a fairy tale. The Queen of Hills transforms into a snow-dusted wonderland between December and February, drawing thousands of travellers who come to witness the colonial architecture draped in white, sip hot chai on fog-covered ridges, and build their first snowman on the famous Mall Road.
Whether you are planning a romantic escape or a family holiday, these ten destinations within and around Shimla will make your winter trip absolutely unforgettable.
1. Mall Road
The beating heart of Shimla, Mall Road is even more charming in winter when the Victorian buildings are dusted with snow and the crowds thin out. Browse the little shops for Himachali shawls and woollens, grab a steaming cup of rajma chawal, and stroll at a leisurely pace — just the way hill life is meant to be.
2. Jakhoo Hill & Temple
At 2,455 metres, Jakhoo is the highest point in Shimla. The ancient Hanuman temple atop this hill is a rewarding trek in every season, but winter gives you something extra: an unbroken panorama of snow-capped peaks stretching from Chail to the Shivaliks. Start early to beat the clouds.
3. Kufri
Just 16 km from Shimla, Kufri is the region's top snow destination. Skiing, snowboarding, and yak rides are all available here between December and February. The Himalayan Nature Park nearby houses rare Himalayan wildlife — a great add-on for families.
4. Chail
A less-crowded alternative to Shimla, Chail is just 45 km away and sits at a higher elevation. Home to the world's highest cricket ground, a palatial heritage hotel, and a quiet wildlife sanctuary, Chail is perfect for those who want serenity over selfies.
5. The Ridge
One of the largest open spaces in any hill station, the Ridge offers panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges on clear winter days. The neo-Gothic Christ Church here dates to 1844 and looks stunning against a snowy backdrop — a photographer's delight.
6. Chadwick Falls
This 67-metre waterfall is a short drive from the town centre. In peak winter it may partially freeze, creating an ethereal icy curtain that is absolutely worth the short hike through the Glen forest.
7. Narkanda
Around 65 km from Shimla on the old Hindustan-Tibet road, Narkanda receives heavier snowfall than the town itself. The Hatu Peak trek from here rewards you with sweeping views. In January and February this is one of the best places in Himachal to see a true snowscape.
8. Scandal Point
Named after a centuries-old colonial legend, Scandal Point is the iconic junction of the Ridge and Mall Road. Street food stalls here sell piping-hot corn and roasted peanuts — a quintessential winter Shimla experience.
9. Naldehra Golf Course
One of India's oldest and highest golf courses, Naldehra is about 23 km from Shimla. Even if you do not play golf, walking through the rolling mist-covered greens surrounded by deodars is deeply peaceful.
10. Toy Train to Kalka
A UNESCO World Heritage journey, the Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge railway cuts through 102 tunnels and over 900 bridges. In winter, the vistas from the train window — snow-laced forests, frozen streams, ancient viaducts — are nothing short of cinematic. Book the Shivalik Deluxe Express for the best seats.
Tips for Your Shimla Winter Trip

- The best time for snowfall is mid-December to mid-February
- Carry cash — ATMs in remote areas sometimes run out during peak season
- Driving on icy mountain roads requires chains on tyres; confirm with your cab operator
